The U.S. just warned Poland that Russia might stage a fake accident on their border. I sat down with Defense Analyst Pravin Sawhney to break down what it means and it's darker than the headline.
The scenario: Russian or Belarusian troops cross into Poland, claim GPS failure or a rescue mission gone wrong, then Moscow offers to withdraw in exchange for the West cutting aid to Ukraine. Missile strikes on Polish infrastructure are on the table too.
Here's the part that matters. Putin's reportedly shifting from special military operation to full war posture, and that's not just rhetoric. Special operation means diplomacy stays open. War means deep strikes on logistics and supply lines, first use nuclear doctrine on the table, and Poland and Romania become primary targets because that's where NATO's hardware is stacking up.
Sawhney's read on NATO is brutal. 32 members, barely any joint exercises, no money, and 70% of its actual combat weight is the U.S. military, which is already stretched thin across Iran, Ukraine, and now potentially Poland.
Whoever thinks Europe alone can hold this line is dreaming.
The bigger question: what actually triggers Article 5? A few drones and Poland calls it an accident, nobody blinks. A missile strike kills Polish soldiers, does NATO respond or hesitate? A ground incursion, how deep does it need to go before troops get committed? Sawhney thinks Putin himself doesn't know the answer yet and that's exactly why he might test it.
